7 Black-owned rosés to try this summer
Abbey Creek is owned by Bertony Faustin, the 1st recorded black winemaker in Oregon. He also produced the documentary “Red, White & Black,” which takes an inside look into the diversity challenge facing the wine industry world wide. Abbey Creek pumps out everything from a late-harvest Gewürztraminer to a juicy summertime Rosé de Pinot. This was one of the more unique rosés we’ve tried. I tasted cranberries, sour cherry, white flowers, little bit of citrus. Every taste brought something new! This wine made me pumped to taste the rest of Abbey Creek’s portfolio.
Produced by Andréa and Robin McBride, two sisters that live in Monterey, California and Marlborough, New Zealand. They’ve got two rosés in their collection – one a Brut Rosé from NZ and a fruity, dry rosé produced in California that’s part of their Black Girl Magic line. We tried both – the sparkling was really crisp and refreshing. The dry rosé smelled like red berries and raspberries, with citrus notes coming into the mix with your first sip.

Corner 103 is a wine and food tasting experience in Sonoma, which we are going to 150% be visiting next time we’re out there. They produce a dry, still rosé that is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, which is said to have crisp acidity, juicy berry notes and hints of vanilla. For you sparkling vino peeps, they also have a sparkling rosé, made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier which is made in the traditional method champenoise – basically fancy words for “how the French do.” These guys focus on food and wine pairings – we’ve got some tips for you on that here.
This brand focuses on nailing one style: their rosé. La Fete du Rosé is made from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, with the grapes grown on the oldest vineyard on the St. Tropez peninsula. It’s a sustainably grown label and uses zero pesticides. Now through August, they’re donating $2 from every bottle purchased to Color of Change, an organization fighting every day for racial justice, as well as other orgs that support minorities pursuing a career in the wine & spirits industry.
Tasting notes from the brand: The pastel, salmon-pink wine asserts itself charmingly on the nose with agreements of dried fruits, bonbon, and hazelnut. FANCY.
So we’re obsessed with Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings. Next up, John Legend’s wine LVE? John Legend partnered with Napa Valley’s Raymond Vineyard (a pretty well known winery with bomb Cab Sauv) to create LVE Wines a few years back. They produce a French sparkling rosé and a Côtes de Provence rosé that looks perfect for summertime sipping. Another celeb brand we want to try out, too: Wade Cellars.
Mason Noir is based in Willamette Valley, OR (one of our favorite regions) and is owned by sommelier and winemaker André Hueston Mack. You guys know we’re a sucker for good label art, and Mason Noir does not disappoint. We ordered the 2018 Love Drunk – this was your classic super fruity beach rosé with loads of strawberry notes, as well as raspberries, watermelon, and a little bit of kiwi. They’re supposedly releasing another rosé soon named Bourgeois. And, André also owns a ham restaurant in Brooklyn. A restaurant, dedicated to HAM. You better believe we will be visiting once COVID decides to chill.
Being big travelers ourselves, we are obsessed with the concept of this label. Started by three friends, Wandering Wines is a curation of wines from a great wine producing region south of the border, the Maule Valley in Chile. Their Keen label has a rosé from the region that is made from Cabernet. It’s supposed to be crisp and juicy, with notes of nectarine, melon and watermelon.
